On the morning of Thursday 5th August, Tara Saville joined Peterlee police on a number of drugs raids across East Durham. Police arrested another 6 People in this latest offensive against suspected drug dealers, after arresting 12 last week in previous raids.
More than 100 Durham Constabulary officers were involved in the swoops on homes in Horden, Easington Colliery and Peterlee. The strikes were carried out as part of Operation Nimrod, an ongoing programme aimed at tackling street-level dealing in County Durham, in particular targeting heroin supply.
The raids were followed up with patrols by police community support officers, who explained to people in the area what had happened and urged them to contact police about suspected dealers and other criminal activity.
Officers are also working alongside other agencies, including the Drug and Alcohol Action Team, to offer support to help addicts seek treatment.
After the raids and the briefing information, Tara said "The work that our police are doing to tackle drugs is amazing.
"I am especially impressed with how they are trying to tackle the problem both through removing dealers from our streets and through supporting addicts to help them change their lives.
"The community links also play a huge part in this, and the work that police have done to build these links and in listening to local people should also be praised.
"It is vital that we continue to support our local police, so that they have the funding to do their jobs effectively, and they have the community information to help keep us safe."
